BASED IN SYDNEY, I WORK AS A LOCATION SOUND RECORDIST ON FEATURE FILMS, SHORT FILMS, DOCUMENTARY, TVC AD WORK, CORPORATES...
LOCATION SOUND RECORDING IS MORE THAN JUST SHOWING UP AND POINTING A MICROPHONE. AT ANY GIVEN TIME THERE CAN BE NUMEROUS MICROPHONES IN PLAY, BOOM MICS, WIRELESS LAV MICS HIDDEN ON ACTORS, PLANT MICS HIDDEN ON SET, AND ALL HAVE SPECIFIC ROLES THAT NEED TO BE COORDINATED TO ENSURE CAPTURING EVERYTHING NEEDED FOR POST PRODUCTION. Managing multi band Radio frequency, ensuring there is no potential rf overlap with other departments, regularly checking each lav mic on talent to ensure it is capturing clean audio, and then adjusting mics on person, all while keeping a calm maner and helping to ensure everyone else on set has as pleasant a day as possible.
Always happy to collaborate in pre-production with directors, producers, post sound editors, and all other departments. It is the full team of the film crew that puts the film together. while I enjoy inter-departamental communication, i am fully capable and happy to work completely on my own.
While I am based in Sydney, I am always happy to travel for work, all around NSW and Australia. I have recorded sound for films in every corner of Australia. From TV shows in the Streets of Sydney, to TVC ads in the outback of south australia, to feature films in the thick forests of tasmania. Managing gear loads while travelling is a specific skill. Understanding some shoots in some locations just won't have the potential to bring 5 pelican cases full with every bit of gear, while keeping in mind that on location, there can never be a needed piece of gear that is not there. By working with production in advance to know specifically what travel allows, what filming locations restrict, and what is needed and expected, I ensure all gear is available, no fluff.
One of the biggest differences in a sound recordist is the gear they bring. it's not just which microphone they put at the end of a boom pole. Professional sound recording requires top of the line gear, and enough of it that all problems can be solved properly and quickly, without any loss in final quality due to gear constraints. I consistently invest in the highest quality gear available, and make sure I have enough so there is never an issue of not having what is needed.
I fully believe in ending the old school form of bullying on film sets. There is a prevailing belief with some in this industry that because they were treated poorly on film sets of yesteryear, it justifies and even necessitates treating the younger and more novice people poorly on film sets today. I treat everyone with respect and dignity, and insist on the same. A film set has necessary hiarcy, which is important to adhere to, but that does not include bullying people just starting out in their career. Creating film can be a beautiful experience, and I love being a part of that with everyone.
